THE EVOLUTION OF STRAIGHT8

It’s all change in 2013 for those stalwarts of the London film scene, straight 8. From Cannes to Edgar Wright and back, the filmmaking phenomenon, started in 1999, is building up to its first foray into feature filmmaking.

In their own words:

we are attempting to make the first straight 8 feature film, working with an adaptation of a known story of 30 chapters with 30 x brilliant past straight8ers (not all selected yet) taking a cartridge each to make a feature length film together.  we’ll need some luck and a following wind but we reckon we can do it

It sounds like just the kind of mad thing that they’d try next, and a fantastic project to get involved with. Beyond that, the gang are launching their own app, which will allow you to get the full straight 8 filmmaking experience on your smartphone. Of course, there are a ton of Super 8 apps out there, but none are geared towards this unique style of filmmaking, making this app – and the accompanying Kickstarter campaign – something to really get behind. We at Soho Shorts wish the straight 8 gang the very best moving on into the new year – we can’t wait to see what it brings.
