VIMEO LAUNCHES PAY-PER-VIEW

Only a couple of months ago Vimeo launched a new initiative to help its contributors earn money.

The video streaming site, which more than 85 million users, has introduced a virtual Tips Jar for its community to make donations to filmmakers.

“Creators have asked us for quite some time to help them monetise their work, but we think it needed an approach that put the controls back into the hands of the creators themselves,” said Dae Mellencamp, President of Vimeo.

Now alongside they have launched a new pay-per-view service in beta, which will allow film creators to distribute their content to their audience.

The pay-per-view service offers a suite of features enabling creators to sell their films directly to consumers, giving them full control over pricing, viewing periods, release geography and bonus content.Viewers in selected territories are now able to purchase six movies at launch, all hand-picked by the Vimeo staff.

Any content is automatically downloaded to a user’s ‘Watch Later’ list for access on an HD TV through Apple TV, Samsung connected TV, Roku streaming box, iPad or other compatible device.

UK users get access to the opening film of our RSSF 2012 edition Shut Up and Play the Hits, a documentary on the last concert by James Murphy’s acclaimed band LCD Soundsystem. It costs $6.99 (£4.40).

In Canada and US the launch movies include Javier Bardem’s passion project Sons of the Clouds: The Last Colony, which addresses human rights issues in the Western Sahara.

We Are Legion The Story of Hacktivists, a documentary on hacking ground Anonymous, is also just available in the US, where it can be accessed for $4.99.

Worldwide, the Vimeo pay-per-view movies service is offering Wayne White documentary Beauty is Embarrassing ($5) and action sports films Sunny ($5) and Teton Gravity Research ($9).

“Our goal is to provide an open and flexible platform that allows all creators and content owners to earn revenue directly from their audiences,” said Vimeo chief executive Kerry Trainor.

“We’re really excited to offer this selection of high quality movies in our preview, and we look forward to working with creators worldwide whose stories have a clear home on Vimeo.”
