The 8th London Short Film Festival runs from the 7th – 16th of January 2011 at more than 20 venues across London. The festival will celebrate the very best in contemporary British short filmmaking, with 19 programmes of new shorts, showcasing more than 200 new short films from British filmmakers.
Rushes Soho Shorts have found a spot in there, with our guest programme, Queer Brit, a showcase of LGBT shorts, showing at the Greenwich Picturehouse on the 10th of January.

The London Short Film Festival and Jersey’s Branchage Festival have been closely linked since Branchage was founded in 2008, and following previous LSFF / Branchage events such as Outsiders at Bishopsgate in 2009 (with live sets by Paloma Faith, Jeremy Warmsley and Breton) and the ISOLATION live soundtrack event at the Roundhouse in 2010, comes an original exclusive premiere where film meets cabaret. Influenced by Kusturica-style Gypsy weddings to lavish Bollywood affairs to a quickie in Las Vegas, this theatrical and filmic live event showcases pre-1930 silent cinema alongside Russian wedding folk songs and surreal haunting musics. With live sets from Plaster of Paris, Rhosyn, pianistJames Keay, DJ Penny Metal, and compered by Uncle Dennis (Freddie Syborn), this promises to be a magical and immersive evening of live music and film. Plus free wedding cake!

· Clio Barnard: Before The Arbor
Clio Barnard was the toast of the 2010 BFI London Film Festival with her debut feature THE ARBOR, which won the Best British Newcomer Award. Having been working as a filmmaker and visual artist for a number of years, here’s a chance to see her earlier work, and to see how her relationship between fictional film language and documentary led to THE ARBOR, which itself was an Artangel commission. Clio will be in attendance in conversation with journalist and producer Hannah Patterson following the screening.

· Ben Rivers: This Is My Land (+ in conversation with Andrew Kotting)
Ben Rivers is a filmmaker whose work treads a line between documentary and fiction, often filming people who have separated themselves from society. Rivers always shoots on film, using super-8, 16mm, and other near antique cameras, and he often self develops. following the screening, Rivers will be in conversation with filmmaker and artist Andrew Kotting, best known for his award winning documentary GALLIVANT and IVUL released in 2010 by Artificial Eye. Kotting and Rivers have previously collaborated, particularly on the Channel swim documentary OFFSHORE.

Salon des Refusés is an experiment in film curation with a simple philosophy: only screen short films that have been rejected by other film festivals.
At LSFF, the Salon will put together a programme of short films that were submitted to, but not accepted by, the LSFF. The programme will be a free screening as part of the LSFF’s Closing Night, at the Shortwave Cinema.
The Salon’s aim is to highlight the subjectivity of the programming process and destabilise the notion that there are “good” shorts (which appear at festivals) and “bad” shorts (which don’t). The Salon celebrates the diversity of the short film format and offers an alternative space for its exhibition, as a challenge to the standard festival shorts programme.

· Kino London: Borderlands – become your very own psycho-geographer in this unique filmmaking challenge! Then screen your film at an amazing location on London’s edgelands!
This January Kino London partners with LSFF to bring you a filmmaking challenge to really sink your teeth into.
Over five days, and working within pre-designated areas on the far edgelands of South-East, East and North-East London, participants will venture into the city’s furthermost parts to make short films. Drawing inspiration from Iain Sinclair’s writings on London’s Edgelands and films such as Andrew Kötting’s GALLIVANT exploring the coast of Britain, the challenge aims to explore and document the psychogeography of the city’s outer limits. Here there be monsters… perhaps!
· The challenge will launch with a Kino production meeting on Saturday 8th January. Anybody wishing to take part in the event must attend the meeting.
Participants from all areas of filmmaking are encouraged to take part — from writers through to actors, camera operators and editors – just let us know your area of expertise when you sign up. Luke Seomore and Joseph Bull’s film installation SOLACE is a non-narrative piece that captures fragments in the daily lives of a group of East London teenagers, exploring friendship, mortality and human interaction. Through a series of monologues, SOLACE reveals moments of warmth, teenage isolation and the transition from adolescence into adulthood. The originally composed score pulses and glides through the film, revealing the nuances of the teenagers’ lives; moments of joy, bravado, aggression and vulnerability. These sequences demonstrate the warmth between friends, while exploring the sharp exchanges and crueller nature of teenage life. Directed in a non-conventional style, SOLACEblurs the line between fiction, documentary and art.
Screening for free at the ICA on Weds, Thurs and Fri afternoons of the Festival, the directors will be in attendance for a Q&A on Weds 13 Jan.

Making Tracks is a unique experience: a live cinematic event that combines up-and-coming filmmaking talent with live music. In a programme tailored exclusively for the LSFF,Whirlygig Cinema and The Cabinet of Living Cinema will continue their collaboration, the former curating a programme of exciting films and the latter performing brand new scores for them. The aim is to bring a magical dimension to these already exceptional short films, offering a whole new perception for audience and filmmakers alike.
This exclusive London Short Film Festival themed event features work by filmmakers who have screened and been championed by the Festival in previous years, including older work of filmmakers who are screening this year, including Jake and Helena Astbury, Max Hattler, Kayla Parker, Kiron Hussein, Magali Charrier and Sophie Windsor Clive.
· GLEANERS – Tonight we go a-gleaming – direct from Abandon Normal Devices
An evening of recent artists’ films using moving image archives, featuring the London premiere of the Gleaners project, commissioned by Abandon Normal Devices.
Experimental filmmakers Jenna Collins and Sam Meech present two new kaleidoscopic short films, made during residencies in the North West Film Archive at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Diving into the amateur fiction footage, Jenna Collins arrives at a new film that focuses on accent, atmosphere and what might be just over the North West horizon.
Meanwhile, building up a classic narrative with a dream-inflected twist, Sam Meech’s epic collage will be narrated live by poet Nathan Jones of the Mercy Collective, with a score by Carl Brown of Wave Machines.
An accompanying programme of short films will expand on the spectrum of artistic approaches to mixing found footage with electric results, including films from Jordan Baseman,Sarah Wood and Dave Griffiths. Curated by Kate Taylor.
