SHORT FILMS: 10BY10 ON THE SPACE

10by10 is a collection of 10 short films from 10 UK cities by 10 black writers, presenting a vivid new portrait of life in our nation today. A commission for Arts Council England & BBC’s digital platform The Space, 10by10 is a brand new project developed and produced by eclipse theatre company ltd – the only black-led national touring company.

In April 2012 eclipse theatre invited 10 writers from across their UK touring network to attend a writing workshop at The Crucible Theatre, Sheffield led by Artistic Director Dawn Walton and Writers Tutor Ola Animashawun (Royal Court Theatre). All attendees were asked to read A Rage in Harlem by Chester Himes and to write a contemporary drama in response to the novel which was set in their own city and lasted about five minutes.

Each 10by10 script was shot in a single day on location. Every film is a treat, but watch all 10 for a unique journey across the UK from a Black British perspective.

All the films were directed by eclipse theatre’s Artistic Director Dawn Walton, produced by Victoria Wood with original music by contemporary electronic music artists Chris Inperspective and Steve Survival.  Starring in the films are some of Britain’s leading black actors, including Hugh Quarshie (Holby City), Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Bad Girls), Vinette Robinson (Sherlock, Waterloo Road), MEN award winning O-T Fagbenle, Jimmy Akinbola (Holby City),and Wunmi Musaka (I Am Slave). Playwrights involved in the project include Olivier Award winner Bola Agbaje (Gone Too Far! and Belong, Royal Court), television writers Maurice Bessman (Brookside, Casualty), Ben Tagoe (Eastenders), radio writer Ishy Din (John Barnes Saved My Life, BBC1′s Brief Encounters) and MOBO award winning hip hop artist Kingslee “Akala” Daley.
